Make your bed

I remember the opening theme of the speech by former Navy Seal; Admiral William H McRaven:-

“Every morning, we would have to make our beds. If the task wasn’t done properly, we would be sent on a 10-mile run. Making my bed taught me the importance of getting my day off to a good start. Years later, when we finally captured Saddam Hussein in Iraq, I was intrigued to notice that he had never made his bed. It’s that kind of laziness that can lead to the downfall of any dictator.”

Whilst I do not personally have the threat of a 10-mile run hanging over me for failing to make my bed, nor am I dictator (the children may disagree), I’ve always liked this line about making your bed in the morning. It does get the day off to a good start, because it means you’ve had the strength to drag yourself up out of bed and tidy up, moreover, the bed will be there all nice and neat and waiting for you at the end of the day when you need it the most.

These thoughts help me most mornings, but particularly on these grey, colourless January Monday mornings.

Rise up I did, made my bed (the photo was taken with me in it) and dragged my sad behind into the office for a couple of hours. I was perked up by receiving an email from Brian’s daughter (Brian being the very first Widow Twankey at BATS 50 years ago) thanking us all for looking after him on Saturday and saying how much they enjoyed the show. I was chuffed to bits and it put a smile on my face for the rest of the day!

At lunchtime I even took care of a couple of bonus jobs - including a broken wing mirror on Big Blue in advance of the MOT tomorrow (eep) - and cracked on this afternoon.

Already looking forward to crawling into that nicely made bed this evening!
