A Flock of Fieldfares
Len went to play tennis. Basil and I Cecilied down the road to Garendon Park. At least the sun shone wanly although I began to feel cold in my Nepalese knitted jacket.
As we approached the three point turn, there is a ploughed field on the right. I noticed a large flock of birds swooping over it, pecking at the soil, sometimes settling and sometimes coming to rest on neighbouring trees. I couldn't identify them in the field although I could see that they were about the size of blackbirds with brown backs and pale fronts.
Back home, settled with a hot mug of hot chocolate, I enlarged this photo in Photoshop and used Google Lens to investigate. Fieldfares!
They are members of the thrush family and are often seen in flocks. They migrate south from Scandinavia to spend relatively mild winters in UK. Maybe they're aware of the arrival of storms here at the end of the week.
