Whales
For steveng's WidWed today I visited the first day of 'Whales' in Winchester Cathedral. Today's challenge theme is 'colourful/striking'. I thought this exhibition/installation was both. I also reckon it's one of the most difficult things I've blipped for quite a while. The obvious way would have been to shoot straight down the nave towards the altar but a) there are big white screens (unconnected to the artworks) all the way down the middle and b) I've just done that too many times. Besides the best bits for me were not the three figures of the whales, which I thought slightly too small for the giant space and rather lacking in lighting, but the banners and the soundscape. The banner designs were made by feeding whale sounds into an electronic box which converted them into swirls and shapes. The soundscape I can't bring you at all, but it was wonderful.
So here is a slightly abstract picture from the exhibition. It does include one of the whales with a blue light shining through it. And there is more information on the artist, etc in extras.
Thanks so much, Steven, for hosting today. Thanks also to all of you who sent good wishes and kind comments about my sis. And have a good evening, all xx
