A Gamp...
is what my father called an umbrella.. it sounded perfect for something that stopped you getting damp!! In this photo of a (fairly) typical, but rather special Cotswold village there is a tourist with an umbrolly (since it wasn't raining)!!
The word Umbrella comes from the Latin umbra = shadow and ella which is a French suffix which means 'little' So 'little shade' literally. In this case she had a little more shade!
