Crossing the Red Line
It would have been terrific if the driver of that black car had come along and moved it just then, but you get what you get.
Although you can’t tell from the photo, we had a day at the opera: the MetLive production of Aida, shown at our local downtown movie theater at 930 in the morning. Like the man says, it’s from the Met, and it’s live, hopefully being shown at a theater near you. The music and the singers were stunning; this new production maybe not so much. There was some business about architects in the 1920s discovering a tomb, from which emanates the story of Aida. Every once in awhile there was an Indiana Jones type person who would wander across the stage with a clipboard or an artifact; I found it very disturbing since the timing never made sense to me. And there was a lot of very modern dancing—a male ballet corps, interesting sinuous movement, children being hefted about. The Indiana Jones people carried an elephant statue during the grand march—not as impressive as a real elephant, and a very odd mix of fedoras and pharoah’s headgear, but you just can’t dim that fabulous soaring score, no matter what you do.
