It's Complicated

In "It's Complicated", Meryl Streep plays Jane Adler, a divorced woman in her fifties whose ex-husband Jake (Alec Baldwin) has married a younger woman.

When Jake and Jane find themselves alone together for a weekend, they reminisce, have dinner, a bit of a dance, some drinks and before you know it there's knickers on the bedroom floor and Jane's wondering what she's done.

Jake is delighted.  "Ah, home sweet home", he says, patting her on the you-know-where.

And this is what is fun about "It's Complicated".  Alec Baldwin gets to be irrepressibly rude and inappropriate, which is something he does rather well and with absolute conviction.  In his younger years, this was a bit slimy, but in his paunchy fifties, there's something loveable and Shatnerish about his self-confident naughtiness.  I think that's why as an actor, he's really caught his second wind lately.

Anyway, I digress.  "It's Complicated" becomes even more complicated when Jane meets Adam (Steve Martin) a jolly nice chap and fellow divorcee who is interested in her.  Should she pursue it, or should she try to reconcile with Jake, even though this would break up his new family?

I really liked this film.  It's gently funny all the way through with some huge laughs along the way.  Steve Martin does very well in a low-key role that only occasionally turns wild and crazy (but at just the right time).  Alec Baldwin steals the show naturaly, but Meryl holds the whole thing together and probably gets the best line in the film.

I will not repeat this line but it is something you would never expect Meryl to say and has something to do with semen.  You want to see the film now, right?  Good.  8/10
