Riding out Storm Herminia
Well the South got it today as we awoke to powerful wind and lashing rain that continued all morning. I tried to go for a walk but it just wasn’t worth it. So instead of doing another one out of the book we decided to dodge the weather and see a matinee of The Brutalist which at 3 hours 20 mins is the longest film on the Bafta nominations list. We went to the Everyman in Winchester as they do food and drinks and it always feel like an event. We had brunch first though and obviously with Dry January I had to get my kicks from the the basque cheesecake rather than the espresso Martini but it was worth dodging branches to get there.
On to the film! It was really good, richly fascinating, full of depth and nuance and engaging throughout. The final penny doesn’t drop until the end but it’s such an unusual film. Worth seeing in a cinema. As everyone has been saying, with an ‘interlude’ (an intermission) it doesn’t really feel too long and the film maker has scored the break so you can stay in the mood. The Basque cheesecake didn’t distract too much either.
We got an alert saying we had a power cut so drove home in trepidation but by the time we got there, although there had clearly been one -flashing cooker light etc - it was all fine. So we lit the fire, read the papers and in the evening finished off Bad Sisters which was very satisfying.
