Gladesville Bridge
Sydney has many fascinating bridges including Gladesville Bridge. From an engineering point of view it is also interesting; within the main arch there are quite a number of large cables running inside concrete tunnels which, through tension, hold the whole thing up.
The bridge was opened on 2 October 1964by Princess Alexandra and at this time it was the longest concrete arch bridge in the world. It was to be part of a north-western freeway but even though this bridge and two others were built the freeway failed to eventuate.
