Forodhani

The trip to Comoros may be over, but the Christmas holidays roll on. Therefore what better to do than hop over to Zanzibar for more relaxation. I caught the ferry to Stone Town and checked in at a budget place, which had no flat surfaces and the flimsiest of flimsy curtains, but couldn’t have been more central.

Around sunset I fell asleep for a few hours and when I woke up, hunger was striking, and I was worried I may have missed the dinner window. I went to the night market at Forodhani Gardens to seek sustenance, and needn’t have panicked because it was as thronging as ever with food stalls and hustlers flogging kebabs, seafood and all many of tasty treats.

Sadly, they’ve banned the acrobatic jumpers in the centre of Stone Town, which is a crying shame. Young lads used to cartwheel and somersault off the quay walls and it was a joyful spectacle. Mourning their absence, I ate shwarma and drank sugar cane juice whilst perched on an old cannon.
