Canal Boat Stories, Robbie Cumming
It was a niche sort of event, but it was very entertaining - Canal Boat Stories with Robbie Cumming, based on his TV programme (Canal Boat Diaries), and You Tube series, which we really like. The next TV series willl be on the Yesterday channel, which basically indicates the demographic of the audience at the Brixham Theatre. We were able to see and listen to one of our heroes of slow televison. For a living he travels along the canal network and talks about not much. Occasionally he plays a guitar. Sometimes he goes in a pub, and features ‘the pub of the week.’ He fettles and does some DIY repairs. He chats to other boaters. He films his adventures using the simplest of equipment and puts them on you tube. Anyone can do it. We were there with a theatre full of fans, some of whom were clearly star struck. Although there are many boats the nearest canal to here is the Exeter Canal. ‘Let’s crank it, ‘ his catch phrase almost brought the house down. Long live ‘the Naughty Lass’. Great name for a canal boat.
