Rockin In The Free World . . .Neil Young
The Lindis Pass is iconic in New Zealand road trips with golden tussock slopes on both sides of the highway. Today I got to see what is beyond the highway. Just pass the summit lookout we turned right and through a gate to drive over gentle tussock country. This was a short drive and we returned the same way. It showed us that the tussock land we see from the highway continues for miles. Back on the highway we drove a short way and turned left into a large station that gave us access to a track climbing up Old Man Peak 1826 mts/5990 ft. This was a pretty good track that zig zagged up and up. I kept my eyes open. The main blip is looking north from the top. We had left the tussock below and were parked on what looked like a giant stone pit. The decent from here was straight forward and we were again in the tussock driving down a long valley.
The first extra is our lunch stop. A hut and three toilets/out houses/long drops. The availabity of toilets is of interest to the women in our group. The one in the second extra had no door but a great view. After our pcnic lunch we continued down the valley but with the addition of multiple stream crossings. That is how I chose todays song title. The water isn't that deep but there was often a drop off into the water and they all had big boulders to bounce our way over and then a climb out of the water. I lost count after 15 and over dinner we all thought there must have been 30. Last extra shows some of our party crossing and how the crossings aren't far apart.
Our destination for the night was Naseby and we are in very posh units in the grounds of what was the school. Dinner was also wonderful and tonight I had whitebait fritters and salad. To sum up the rockin and rolling was better today because in between there had been smoother driving. Again it is wonderful to be in this landscape.
