Living my dream

Re-stocked

As a result of eating homemade sourdough bread myself (to the exclusion of all other breads), and bartering loaves with G (plus cheese, in exchange for milk) and the Soapmaker (for servicing my car last month) I get through a fair amount of flour.

So I buy it in bulk(ish): 5kg at a time. Organic flour is best for sourdough thanks to it being full of natural yeasts, but it is increasingly hard to get hold of hereabouts.

I choose to get South Island-grown flour and there are a couple of farms which mill their own wheat in Canterbury.

The closest one is organic and is stocked in the wholefood shop near Oamaru, but only intermittently - and rarely when I want it (of course). The other one is biodynamic and not stocked anywhere locally. Both can be bought online and are a comparable price. So when I fail to get flour from the wholefood store I order supplies from the biodynamic farm. Superior flour in my opinion.

The reason I don't always buy biodynamic is thanks to the cost of shipping the flour to my Rural Delivery address. It adds $26 in all to the price, which is ridiculous. However, last week a friend of a friend who lives in town offered to take my deliveries whenever I want, thus saving me $18.

When I picked up the these two bags of flour this afternoon she received a jar of Lemon Marmalade in exchange for the use of her address.

The flour is now in the freezer for a few days. I had a weevil experience in December in a sack of wholemeal, which I am happy to avoid in future. Freezing the flour kills any bugs in there.

End of flour Blip.

Bean has put on another 1kg in weight this week. She definitely looks rounder. And she almost did the zoomies today on our walk. When she actually does zoom it will be reason for great celebration.
