Sundial 6 Carberry - with champagne
As I walked, between lanterns decorated with petals, into the Italian Garden at Carberry near Musselburgh I noticed a large bath filled with bottles of champagne on ice. The fountains were tinkling as fresh flower heads floated in the pool and the scent of roses filled the air while the tall trees sheltered the garden from the strong wind. What a lovely setting to have a glass of bubbly.
In the background beneath the sun parasol is the bath but my object was to see this 17th century magnificent octagonal sundial. The shaft is believed to be a 20th century reproduction but the capital is original and pierced right through but it was not easy to get a photo of the hollow effect and the rare raised plaques on the faces. I couldn’t tell the time on it but knew it was time for a quick retreat and to leave before any invited wedding guests might appear for their champagne from the bath.
