With the local beaches being vulnerable to attack during the war, concrete anti tank traps and anti glider posts were placed around the coast. At the water’s edge the wooden post which was sunk into concrete is one of several still evident here on the beach and there are hundreds of tank traps remaining nearby. This collapsed cube would have originally had metal bars to slot into the groves to allow soldiers to access the beach. (Here are some examples about 200 metres away)
During summer the distant Bass Rock appears white as if it is covered in snow but it is the result of the droppings from thousands of gannets and other nesting sea birds. Now it is usually grey although at times today it looked white with the sun on it as in the photo.
