Blue Quondong
On my early morning neighbourhood walks recently, I've noticed flocks of Lorikeets (Rainbow and Scaly-breasted) in a cluster of flowering trees on the edge of the forest reserve. Bees and other small insects are also active. I photographed the flowers this morning and think the trees, 20 metres or so high, are Blue Quondong, Elaeocarpus augustifolius. Wikipedia says that they grow from India to northern Australia and New Caledonia. I'm told that this species occurs naturally in rainforest as far south as Brisbane and northern NSW, but I'm sure these particular trees have been planted at some time in the past.
