Floppy gooseneck

Not something I’d experienced with all my previous boats, more commonly the boom got stuck on the gooseneck and was almost impossible to disengage.
On Firefly the opposite was true and to stop the boom falling off I had to put some string round the mast.
Had a close look today and the block of wood inside the end of the boom was largely missing and what was there had all but rotted away.
Drilled out the rivets, removed the end fitting and made a new block from oak. Also made it cross grain rather than end grain so it is more durable. Considering the first one lasted 40 years my replacement should be good for the rest of the century!
