Bridge to Nowhere
At the Mangapurua trig there us a memorial to early settlers, mostly WW1 servicemen, who had been given small sections of these very remote valleys as a sort of thank you - with the expectation that a road would be built - and it sort of was, starting with a large concrete bridge, but the sections proved almost impossible to maintain. Settlers broke their backs building cabins, trying to live off the land - but the road kept being swept away, and in the forties the government decided to maintain it no longer, and all the setters were unsettled. The concrete bridge remains, now renamed the bridge to nowhere, and tourists like me can hike, bike, canoe or jet boat to see this strange bit of history
