I am old fashioned. If I have time I like to read a print newspaper, I like turning the pages. And notwithstanding the awfulness of much that is going on in the world, keeping abreast of the news and reading good journalism is something I enjoy doing. From my understanding, I am in a rapidly diminishing minority, but in a world where misinformation, disinformation and (let’s call a spade a spade) outright lying is rife good independent journalism is vital.

Today’s Observer is a Trump free zone until page 32, with this article about the controversy surrounding a building in Salford “trumping” Trump by coming in on page 16. There’s no getting away from Trump and Elon Musk however: less than three weeks since the inauguration and the project to completely reshape the USA and its politics is proceeding at a frightening speed. As one commentator says, what we are seeing is a thoroughly modern coup d’état. It’s been said that couldn’t happen in the UK. I’m not so sure.
