Esk Valley mine

Sculptures and carvings at the site of the Esk Valley ironstone mine between Goathland and Grosmont. Developed in the 1860s, it was overgrown and largely forgotten. Recently restored, it is now possible to see the remains of shafts, pumping gear, the ventilation flue, and powder house. An interesting spot.

A very gloomy, murky day and it seemed very appropriate that a large part of our walk today was in the Murk Esk valley. Living up to its name!
