We went to Stourhead today as we’d booked for their “Behind the scenes” tour. We went up to the attic rooms (not very photogenic!) and then down to the kitchen (now used as a furniture store) then down again to the basement where we saw the wine store.
Stourhead was the holiday home of the Hoare family but was handed to the National Trust on the death of the 6th baronet.
The Hoare family started one of the earliest banks in the world (originally in Cheapside but now in Regents Street in London) and it’s now the only privately-run bank in the UK. The bank still holds dining events there, which is why there’s still some wine in the cellars!
