National Railway museum York
Today we took the train to York as Mrs AMK decided a few months ago that we needed a short midwinter holiday. It was just as cold and dreich as when we left Edinburgh so we visited the Railway museum that was on my visiting list anyway. Some amazing old steam engines including the Mallard that holds the world record for a steam locomotive achieved in 1938 with a top speed of126 mph.
I had forgotten just how enormous these machines are although I do remember as a small boy being terrified when they arrived at Cupar station heading to Edinburgh belching out steam beside these giant wheels .
Friends had recommended a French restaurant for our evening meal and we were not disappointed - a delicious bowl of French onion soup was just what I needed to warm me up !
