Tiny Tuesday - ‘Something Red for Valentines’

Having been unable to see her two weeks ago because of being unwell, my friend Mary and I visited our elderly friend Hazel in her care home this morning. She was looking well, though she had difficulty hearing us with a television blaring at the other end of the room. There was a kerfuffle for a while as a gentleman resident went on the floor off of his armchair, and it took five people and some lifting apparatus to get him up. Other than that it was a nice jolly visit.

My blip shows a golden heart-shaped signet ring in its original red velvet lined box. Mum and Dad bought it for me from a jewellers shop in Jaywick in the late 60’s. I had just lost a square-shaped signet ring whilst swimming in the sea there, and I screamed so much on realising it had gone beneath the waves that Mum actually thought I was drowning! I wore this replacement ring every day until my mid-teens, when I went off yellow gold and started wearing silver jewellery. At some point I lent it to Mum, and she then wore it for many years. About a decade ago she gave it back to me, as her fingers had gone thin with age and she was worried it would slip off. Although I don’t wear the ring, I would never part with it because of its story. I’m very happily single, and not the slightest bit bothered about Valentines Day, so rather than romantic love this ring represents an enduring love of the unconditional kind between a daughter and her parents.

Many thanks to cathy1947 for hosting the Tiny Tuesday challenge, with this week’s theme of ‘Something red or romantic for Valentines’.
