One of the many opportunities regional art galleries and museums have is to showcase local community talent, values and heroes. Leeds Art Gallery works hard at this. We popped in today to see some remarkable portraits of local people by Curtis Holder, and whilst there happened upon a small display in memory of a local man, compiled in a suitcase. It reminded me of some of the travelling sculptures, kept in suitcases, from refugees. And also of a new friend who left home suddenly, with little more than a suitcase and 3 children, settling here in the UK to avoid bombs and bullets. Ah, the humble suitcase, and all it holds!
