I am reading...
This arrived today and it’s my latest bedside reading.
Even a cursory glance at Christine Rosen’s book
“The Extinction of Experience” raises profound questions about humanity in the digital word.
The chilling argument behind her book is that we prefer life through our computer screens to meeting people face to face.
The evidence is around you in any public space.
Yesterday we had coffee in one of Scotland’s iconic visitor centres, a magnet for tourists, the Wallace monument, and the Japanese teenagers at the next table were engrossed in their phones. Was this what they travelled halfway around the world for?
Storytellers have always known people prefer fiction to reality. And the computer screen offers just that in mega doses compared to the messiness of having to deal with real life humans face to face.
But that is what makes us human.
What do you think?
