Square

For years I have been playing around with designs to use my reclaimed quarry tiles for a patio. Or a path. Or something. Since I moved to my current house, I have been working out how best to use them on the unsquare plinth at the end of the garden, now finally liberated by the moved shed.

I have made a spreadsheet with different designs on different worksheets, each one calculating how many tiles of each colour it will use it will use and how many will be left over.

Today, as M the landscaper asked, I sorted the quarry tiles into those that need mortar removing and those that don't so that he can do that job more efficiently. In the process, I've piled them on a pallet near where they'll be used.

This evening it very slowly sunk in that there are too many tiles with unevenness and chipped surfaces for it to be worth the quantity of skilled labour that M would have to put in to lay them.

On a piece of paper, I started sketching an entirely new idea.
