Exhausting Day
I have been in Oxford today with a friend - both of us are interested (obsessed?) with old graveyards - full of wonderful 'stories'. We had planned a day out together and Lynn suggested a couple of ancient graveyards in Oxford; we went by bus as we both have senior bus passes! Many miles of walking - hence the exhaustion.
The first graveyard (Holywell) hosted the graves of Kenneth Graeme (Wind in the Willows) and Sir John Stainer (Oxford prof & composer - Stainer's 'Crucifixion'). There was a disused church attached to Holywell with its own graveyard which looked interesting. Gates locked - no way in. However, we'd noticed a low wall along one side - 'I think we could get over that', I said..... so over we went! As we were leaving to go back over the wall we met this very smart lady, who must also have come 'over the wall', and got talking to her. Turned out her grandmother is buried here and, when she is passing Oxford (she lives in London), she drops by to 'visit' Granny and keep the grave tidy. (In her very smart bag was a pair of secatuers!) Obligatory photos taken, including one on her phone so she could send it on to her family.
A fascinating and fun day, ending with coffee and cake, before catching a bus back . Many miles walked & a great deal of chatting - so now in front of the fire with a glass of wine. Great day and we look forward to our next adventure - although we probably shouldn't be let out together without supervision. (Hildasrose you will understand!)
Extras of the important graves - choir friends will likely have sung this work by Stainer, although it's not often done now.
