From Gaelic 'coinneach' which means 'mossy', apparently.
Not, I'd have thought, a particularly inventive or useful name - 'So where were you today'? 'Oh, I was up mossy hill' is hardly going to clear things up, especially not in the West of Scotland. Still it was a very nice walk
