Easy like Sunday morning
First of all, thank you for all your good wishes.
It’s hard to believe that it’s only been a few days since Anniemay left hospital. The journey home was both stressful and painful. We do not have a limousine, so even with the passenger seat as far back as it would go, it still caused her difficulty getting in and out of the car.
The house is not designed for disabled living, so we have to make it up as we go along. Piling the seat cushions from one sofa onto another, allows her to sit down without too much difficulty. Getting up is another matter. I’m no longer the fit and healthy man she married and although I manage to help her up, once she’s upright, I’m horizontal.
We contemplate sleeping downstairs for the first night. Her on one sofa, me on another. By about 11.00pm we give this up as a bad idea. She decides to tackle the stairs. The stairs with the nasty, narrow right angle turn at the bottom. I follow behind ready to … what? Act as a cushion? But with her usual determination, she manages to get to the top.
And now here we are on Sunday morning having coffee in our upstairs playroom. She’s already worked out a routine for walking, exercising and so on. The painkillers help, because move she must. And a few aids like a shower seat and rails round the toilet, means she has some independence. I just have to try and keep up with her now.
