Antonine Wall

Geocaching run along a section of the Antonine Wall from Croy Hill to Castlecary

Historic Environment Scotland did a good job of publicising the wall with multiple information boards dotted around on the section I ran. Here though there is no hiding it. The massive sculpture, named Silvanus, of the Roman soldier's head looks out from the line of the Antonine Wall over to the Kilsyth Hills, beyond the edge of the Roman empire.

There was also a geocache discreetly hidden on the sculpture.

The stone behind the sculpture is a replica of a Roman distance stone found in 1868 at Arniebog which is now in a museum in Glasgow. Distance stone are placed along the wall to record each section as it was built. They were carved with pictures that carried powerful political and social messages about Roman army.
