Gargoyles are most commonly found on medieval church roof guttering as water spouts, but earlier examples can be found as religious carvings, and thought to ward off harm or evil influences.  This example can be found at the base of a pillar along the nave of Holy Trinity Church, Bosham;  the oldest parts of the building dates from Saxon times and legend has it the the daughter of King Canute is buried in the church.
