War, what is it good for?

I don’t know how we got onto the subject (but with only two students today….) one moment we were talking politics, the next WWII…and how memories should be told and retold. Which is how I learnt that both students‘ fathers had to walk home from war, both fearing for their lives as they were in uniform and one still with his gun, the other man even had to swim across the Ruhr to get home.
