Down in the woods today

A fallen tree brought down by the winter storms has split open to reveal a deserted honey bees' nest inside, with intact slabs of comb, the cells all empty.

A beautiful series of photographs here shows how wild bees create a nest in locations such as this.
Their strategy for killing hornets is the stuff of nightmares.
