HIGH DESERT SCULPTURE

Awash A Wash

In the hot season of the rains
July afternoon monsoons
send sudden flood water coursing
in wild sluiceway currents
down these carved desert washes.

They may sweep the unaware away
treating them like mere motes of dust
in gusts of winter wind while
the revealed roots that hold the pines
are painstakingly polished and remain.
