Another great day in Rotterdam

This morning we got the metro to near the Rotterdam 40-45 museum to learn more about the bombing of the city, the Nazi occupation and how the city survived. There was a bus replacement part of the way there and just after we got off the bus and a car had a collision.

The museum had many artefacts from the war but obviously we couldn’t read any of it. However we were provided with a translation of the timeline about the war and the film had subtitles so we learned a lot in the 2 hours we were there.

We’d hoped to go on to the contemporary art gallery nearby but decided one museum in a day was enough so we got the bus and metro back to the central market as last night when we went to eat there most places were closing. (We’d ended up having a Vietnamese meal). Now I’m checking on line before we go anywhere as the guide book is 5 years old and unreliable. It did recommend Pintos in the market and Graham was keen on tapas. It was really tasty. Mr C disappeared while we got settled in order to buy a roll with herring off a stall. We had a delicious beetroot avocado dish, smoked salmon and avocado, gambas, patatas bravas and an aubergine dish. All very small plates but tasty.

We bought cheese in the market to take home and Chloe bought a lot of chocolate. I had wanted to try the waffles but after sampling half a chocolate my interest in sweet food had been satisfied.

We saw a Kelly’s store selling British food so we had a look. It was hilarious and full of foods we’d never seen for years like Bisto and Campbells soup. It sold tinned haggis. The sales assistant said it sells well at Burns Night. There were bottles of Irn Bru to wash it down. From there we walked to the church but it is closed on Sunday. I think it’s probably a museum now. As it was sunny we decided to stop off at a bar and sit in the sun with a glass of wine or beer. All the tables were full but a young couple beckoned us over to join them. They were lovely and told us about some funky bars to go to. She’d come back from skiing in Germany. I was surprised it had been good as it was Winterberg near Dusseldorf. They said the market is just for tourists and is very expensive.

We are going to a French Bistro tonight. I checked the water price - €5.95. I’ll be carrying mine in my bag.
