Roman & Romanesque
Arles in Provence is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its Roman monuments and its Christian architecture.
Today's Blip epitomizes these two sites. It is on Republic Square (Place de la République). An obelisk stands in the middle of the square. It comes from the former Roman circus. The fountain around its bases bears the effigy of Neptune with a lion crest. The lion is a symbol of Arles - a gift from the Venetian Republic to the City of Arles. In the background, you can see the lit porch of Saint Trophime's basilica recently restored to its original beauty.
