Community Centre
I had a message that one of my parcels was ready to collect from the Convenience Store so I got a bus to the village this afternoon. After picking up my parcel I took my blip shot. The Community Centre is across the road just opposite the Convenience Store. Its my entry for the Wide Wednesday Challenge which is ... " Interesting Building" Thanks to BobsBlips for hosting.
This building dates from 1875 when it was built as offices for the Medical Officer. Around1900 it became The Axwell Park Miners Institute offering a wide range of leisure activities for miners including a games room with billiard tables. In 1913 an extension was built to house a library and reading room. It also served as a soup kitchen during the 1921 - 1926 miners strikes. After the colliery closed in 1953 it was taken over by the Council and became a Community Centre. Its a very busy centre offering a wide range of activities for all ages.
I popped into Herons for some food shopping before walking home. Lots of empty shelves today. They are getting a lot more customers at the moment with Tesco next door being closed for refurbishment. It had been raining on and off all day and on my way home it started raining quite heavily. I was glad to get indoors,.
Did a few chores, had my evening meal and then at 8.15pm I listened to the footie on the radio. Newcastle were playing away at Liverpool. I did some ironing while I listened. I wasn't hopeful that Newcastle would win or even draw as their track record against Liverpool isn't good. Its 30 years since a Newcastle team last won at Liverpool's ground. Todays result didn't change that statistic. Newcastle didn't play too badly - but Liverpool played much better. Final score Liverpool 2 Newcastle 0.
