Conclave
So many people have said they enjoyed Conclave that I was expecting to be disappointed. I wasn't.
I'd wondered how much of a story you could make out of the selection of a new pope but of course a small stage is excellent for looking close-up at ambition, vanity, hubris, factionalism and folly. And the Catholic church is an excellent case study of power, with its archaic attitudes to race and sex (both meanings).
To begin with I enjoyed the unusually narrow depth of field though after a while it began to feel overused. I kept wanting things to come into focus when someone put their glasses on. But overall I was hugging myself at the cinematography. All that red, either en masse or as a focus point, set against white, grey or black architecture was a gift in the hands of someone who knew how to play with it. And didn't they just!
