The Creative : L painting landscapes

Another in my creative people series, and just two weeks after the last one - perhaps there will be some acceleration in the second half of the year as I convert plans and talk into action! This is my friend L in the studio space she has created for herself in the spare room of her flat. She is currently working on a landscape inspired by her recent travels in the north and west of Scotland. Although she starts with a photograph, the scene develops as she paints and it becomes a mixture of reality and her memories of the place and the impression it created. Different from and more than a simple photo-realist recreation of the scene. We had a bit of a chat about her creative process and the way it has developed in the years since she finished at art college. These days her painting is done in her spare time, when she comes home from work as an art teacher, and it's more about the process than the end product, even if she has sold some pictures recently. Her working space is set up to take best advantage of the window light in the little room and she works surrounded by her other paintings. The only room in her flat where she has her own work. Elsewhere she has the work of other artists up on her walls.
There's a story too about the wooden unit she is working at. Through in Glasgow for the evening opening of an exhibition of her work, L and a friend were spending the day shopping when they spotted the wooden victorian wash stand in an antique shop. They both liked it, although it was L that bought it. Perhaps not the most sensible purchase at that point as the shopkeeper said he couldn't keep it for her until the exhibition opening was finished as he had to shut the shop and get home. So L had to carry it round with her for the rest of the day. A series of pictures online showed the washstand's adventures through the Glasgow streets and on to the exhibition, before making it onto the last train back to Edinburgh and finally a taxi home to L's flat.
