Puffing Billy

The South Tyne Railway turning point at Lintley Halt where the engine is switched from one end to the other. The smell, noise and steam are great and bring back childhood memories.

The Railway is about 4 miles long from Alston along the valley northwards. It originally joined the main line from Newcastle to Carlisle but finally closed in 1976. Built to carry lead from the mines it arrived in 1852 just as the lead mining boom was over. Now it is run by volunteers who do a great job.

Went with two old friends from Yorkshire both of whom like railways. A most self indulgent day that included a 'large' all day breakfast at the cafe at the top of the Hartside Pass (1903 feet). Plenty of tea an excellent lemon cake provided by PaulaJ. Good company with excellent weather made for a day to remember.
