When everything else seems pointless

Much of my energy today seemed to be spent worrying about events happening elsewhere. I am, of course, talking about events happening in Washington, DC, and once more involving that putrid orange f*ckwit; however, he seemingly has a sidekick who is just as odious (albeit on a “little-boy-trying-too-hard-to-impress-daddy” scale). Like most of the world, except for the neo-fascists, I was appalled by what I saw. This American fetish for having everything on TV (or else it doesn’t exist) doesn’t help, of course, but it seems that Trump and Vance stage-managed the whole affair for Russian eyes; at least for Russian Eyes above all. Can there be any doubt any more that the Fanta Felon is a Russian asset (and probably the Bearded Bully too)?

Zelenskyy walked into it, probably knowing that he was going to take a certain amount of flak, but most likely not imagining it would be as bad as it was. The whole event was hideous in its risibility. Does anyone believe a word that “America” says at the moment? “You should be thankful to the United States”; “you are disrespecting the American people”; “you are gambling with World War three”; and then, in his Official Statement, “I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for Peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations. I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE. He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office.”
What, in the name of God, does he mean? American involvement gives Ukraine a big advantage and Zelenskyy doesn’t want that? What a d*ckhead. As if any leader, especially one so embattled and having taken three years of war against the Russians, would refuse an agreement that gives his or her country a big advantage. Trump is a stupid, moronic man, who isn’t fit to lead a parade of clowns, let alone a struggling country. The contempt and anger I feel towards him is almost indescribable.

What this seems to have done, however, in one TV segment, is flipped the world order. Israel, for example, now knowing that the US won’t do anything about anything, has cut off humanitarian supplies to Gaza so it can change the ceasefire deal. Does this remind you of anything else? Netanyahu, already accused of being a war criminal, is now negotiating in exactly the same way as Trump. Agreements now mean nothing. Diplomacy now means nothing. We are back to the rule of the strongest. Except, of course, for all its bluster and bullying, the USA is far from strong. Let’s not forget that this is a country on the verge of bankruptcy.

Then, there is Russia. How will Putin act? How will the North Koreans act? How will China act? If America can leave Ukraine to the Russians, what will it do to protect Taiwan? Is any of this undoable – either now or in four years’ time – and are the Americans smart enough or willing enough to change any of this? I write this as demonstrations against what Trump is doing are breaking out across the country. But what will this change? At least one-third of Americans believe in Trump and/or the Republican Party. They must then, seemingly, support what he is doing. This grotesque charade of democracy continues and you have, on the one side, the Republican cheerleaders, believing in American might and power, while on the other side, there are the apathetic hand-wringers and a few, far too few, taking to the streets to shout their disapproval. Europe is, then, the only hope.

If one good thing has come out of all this, then, it is that we now know where we stand. The USA has finally relinquished its position, which quite honestly it never should have had in the first place, as being a defender of democracy, decency and fairness. It has now positioned itself as a nation of industrialists. Never again will we have to hear the bullshit about being a world leader, as standing for anything other than being a nation of self-interested chancers and thugs, nickel-and-diming its way to oblivion. If a nation can elect the most hideous of humans as its president – and do it twice! – then it deserves nothing but contempt. How far will it go down this road before those at its helm are reined in? And how many others will it drag down with it? These are truly terrifying times.

Against this, relating events in the Ottawacker household seems to be rather frivolous. Ottawacker Jr. had a 7:15am game at Ottawa University against the U14 Toronto FC Academy side and lost 2-1. He played well. We spent the day doing chores and relaxing. It is still cold. It is still snowing.
