Glen Davis and some more historical trivia
In 1938 it was decided to resurrect the NSW shale oil industry by constructing a mine, retorting works and residential township in a remote far flung corner of the Capertee Valley (which itself was remote enough already). The town of Glen Davis rapidly grew to 2000 residents and the works operated until 1952 when operations abruptly ceased and the whole area was abandoned.
It’s only 1.5 hours from our home so today we enjoyed a leisurely visit to what can only be described as a ghost town - we hardly saw another person or passed another car all day!
The main blip is from the mine site showing the retorting works. First extra is the original Glen Davis Pub which is now a boutique hotel and the only business still operating. Second extra shows isbi on the job. Third extra is one of many abandoned houses, in this case just foundations. There is scrap metal everywhere as the final extra shows.
A magnificent day out and even for those not interested in the history, the scenery in the Capertee Valley rivals just about anything I’ve seen in the world!
