There Must Be Magic

Ice Castles of Light and Shine

It was cold enough for some good ice on the cat's water bowl on the front porch, and for what I hope was not the final round of frozen bubbles. Temps were in the mid-20s by the time I went out, though, and my bubbles took a long time to freeze.

We brought the ice in from the water bowl and I got my beads and my headlamp, and I messed around with it all, as I am wont to do. I took a lot of photos of the ice at first, and then over time, as it melted and took on its different forms.

First, the crystals on the top, which eventually break and melt. And then later, a treasure trove inside the shining bowl of ice: a whole crystal forest of tiny, sharp trees.

Here is one of my better shots from the ice abstracts I made on this day. I liked the way the colors played along the bridge of ice. It felt like making castles not of sand, but of ice: ice castles of light and shine.

There was a movie called Ice Castles, and here was its theme song: Melissa Manchester, Through the Eyes of Love.
