A hut for the night
Woke to rain this morning - just a bit drizzly - so no rush to get going. We had a leisurely breakfast and then got on the road heading west to Te Anau and lakes and mountains.
It’s a nice week with them town - mainly a tourist centre with lots of people arriving or leaving.
We sat and had an ice cream at the lakeside and had a brief visit from Ols. He had been working at the school and was on his way home. So another goodbye with a maybe to see him again in Wanaka next week.
We drove out of town and walked one of the tracks which is the start of one of the Great Walks. NZ is very organised with its tramping routes, with huts along the routes for over nighters.
We are not really geared up (or fit enough) for taking on one of the big walks so we dipped in on the evening walk in to Shallow Bay Hut. It’s a short branch off the Kepler Trail.
We arrived early evening, the hut is just above the shore of the lake with fabulous views both up and down. Luckily it was very quiet with just 4 other people there camping. So we had the hut to ourselves - along with many mosquitoes. So whilst it was comfortable we both spent most of the night buried in our sleeping bags to avoid being bitten. I hate mozzies!
