The Lion's Backside?

No! A reflection of the "Two Lion's" back-side.
Note to purists the apostrophe is so placed because "The Two Lions" is singular.

Since the "New Squares" are now open, it's the shortest distance from where we were to where we wanted to be. There's rockall to see as all the shop spaces are, as yet, unoccupied.

As we passed this empty one we were both pulled up short by what appeared to be a square sandstone pillar in the midst of the shop. Closer inspection revealed that it was an "opticacal" illusion which does not show in photo. Apparently the camera couldn't distinguish the same differences in depths of field in the reflection that our eyes saw. We had to cup our hands to the window to be absolutely sure the pillar was made of Breeze-block.

"The Two Lions", like a number of Penrith hostelries is currently empty and unlabelled.

"Other old buildings in the town include the Gloucester Arms Hotel, once the home of Richard lll, and the 16th Century Two Lions Hotel and a small sandstone house which is now part of a later building and overlooks the churchyard."

One day, when I'm stuck for a Blip, I may show those "Norman" arches first hand to compare the ancient with the repro beside it.
