Newstead: The Lost Engine

I was over in Sheringham this afternoon and spotted this engine which had just arrived on the railway this morning.  It's known as 'The Lost Engine' as it has a bit of a history to it.

It was built in 1929 for industrial use and withdrawn from service in 1971.  In 1972, Malcolm Saul purchased "Newstead," saving it from being scrapped.  He moved it to the grounds of a Carmelite convent near Ware, Hertfordshire, where he tended the gardens, and built a shed to protect the engine  Over time, with the growth of trees, it became hidden and rumours spread that the engine had been scrapped, as its location was unknown. After Malcolm Saul's death in 2015, the "lost" engine was rediscovered and the engine was purchased by Alex Alder.  It was taken to Tunbridge Wells where the long process of restoration began.

Now completed, the engine has been moved to the North Norfolk Railway where it will remain for the foreseeable future.
