La Bon Coin

That was the journey from hell. It should have taken just over 3 hours to Windermere from Shropshire. It ended up taking another hour and 45 minutes mainly owing to a massive delay caused by an accident between J32 and 33 which necessitated a detour of the country lanes and settlements alongside the M6, much to the annoyance of the locals I’ll be bound.
Nothing much else to report. Had a bit of a nondescript walk before setting off and a coffee in Much Wenlock before that drive.

Much Wenlock is famous for being the birthplace of the Olympic Games which were started by William Penny Brookes in 1850. The village makes much of this association with an Olympic Trail. And of course the 2012 London Olympics mascot was called “Wenlock”

The village has many fine buildings from Wenlock Priory to a myriad of other houses and homes all built from the local Wenlock limestone. Almost impossible to get a decent shot as there are always cars, which is why today’s shot doesn’t do the village much justice. A Bon coin!

It also had a station on the Wellington - Much Wenlock - Craven Arms Railway on which my maternal grandfather was a guard. I have a couple of books on this railway and he appears in a photograph in both with the crew of a train at Wellington. A priceless image for me.
