Denniston

Denniston first mined 1879The only way up was a very lengthy walk from sea to the top of the plateau at 600mitres or the preferred route aboard the coal wagons up the incline. This was a dangerous way to the top and many would not leave the plateau in fear of the ride down. There is a small ditty that the locals would say, it goes,
Dawn Denniston
Dawn the track
Dawn the way both there and back
God dawn Denniston altogether.
It was a life that was at the extreme of very hard. Danger was everywhere and life and limbs were lost on a regular basis, there was no hospital for many years, and it was good luck or the help of your fellow man that you survived. The mine closed in 1967 after excavating 13 million tons of coal. there is still a mine working on the plateau. Main photo is of the Incline considered to be the 8th wonder of the world?
Extras a poem "Miner" and some old rusting mine equipment.
Note some old film footage can be seen on you tube search Denniston incline
