CannyScot's Day

Winkie

A bright sunny day

We went with our friend for a walk!scooter ride along the Broughty Ferry coastal walkway. She was struck by the tribute to Winkie the pigeon who saved the crew of a sinking bomber plane. On a plaque there is this information.

Winkie, a carrier pigeon, received the first PDSA Dickin Medal from Maria Dickin on 2nd December 1943.
After a Beaufort bomber had ditched in the North Sea Winkie flew for 120miles through stormy weather and covered in oil to deliver the crew's distress message.
Within minutes of her arrival in Broughty Ferry a rescue operation was launched from RAF Leuchars and the crew brought to safety.
