Gion, Kyoto

We were glad that we had discovered the subway passage to Shinjuku station from our hotel when we left a very rainy Tokyo this morning for Kyoto and our first experience of a Shinkansen bulletin train. As billed, they are very punctual, very fast and very comfortable.

We were in Kyoto by mid afternoon so, having had a bite to eat in a nearby Tully’s cafe and checked in, we walked over to the Gion district, where some of the old buildings survive, for a wander round the streets. This one housed some very up-market restaurants.

We settled for a more modest but warming bowl of ramen in a more modern restaurant. Much needed in the cold, damp weather.

We caught the underground train back to Kyoto station and our hotel.
