Flail
A cold and windy day and we went off to Skibbereen for a bit of culture and a visit to the exhibition at Uillin by Debbie Godsell, entitle Flail. A wonderful, thought-provoking and beautifully constructed exhibition. Thankfully Finola has done all the hard-work and provided an erudite and readable blog on what it's all about - basically the separateness of experience of Catholics and Protestants living in Ireland, examined through a harvest theme. It actually worked very well and sort of made sense.
This enigmatic tower is called a History Lesson and is made out of repurposed church kneelers, the images exploring the different ways Protestant and Catholic children were taught about their past - all round towers and fairy forts for the Protestants, and endless struggles with English rule for the Catholics, yet the tower signifies a unified presence (yes, I'm quoting from the blurb), I especially loved the heads - entitled Ancestors, these photos are of the original artworks also displayed and are constructed from recycled materials - humorous and strange yet also disturbingly like heads on pikes.
